Ransomware, Malware and Spyware

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malware used for data kidnapping, an exploit in which the attacker encrypts the victim's data and demands payment for the decryption key. A ransomware program can be installed from an e-mail attachment, an infected program, or a compromised or malicious Web site.

What is malware?

Malware" is short for malicious software and used as a single term to refer to virus, spy ware, worm etc. Malware is designed to cause damage to a stand alone computer or a networked pc. So wherever a malware term is used it means a program which is designed to damage your computer it may be a virus, worm or Trojan.

What is Spyware?

Spyware is Internet jargon for Advertising Supported software (Adware). It is a way for shareware authors to make money from a product, other than by selling it to the users. There are several large media companies that offer them to place banner ads in their products in exchange for a portion of the revenue from banner sales. This way, you don't have to pay for the software and the developers are still getting paid. If you find the banners annoying, there is usually an option to remove them, by paying the regular licensing fee.

List of most common Ransomware, Malware/Spyware in Year 2012.

Ukash Virus (Ransomware) :- Ukash Virus is an aggressive group of ransomware scams that tries to swindle your money from you. It is a very convincing virus because it uses alerts presented as given by an official institution, e.g. local or country’s police. It locks your computer completely therefore the only thing you can do is to see the message. If one wants to unlock the computer, the message advices to pay the fine. Of course, this is only a scam and paying the fine will not change anything. The institutions vary from police to copyright ones. However, in many cases the messages and designs are similar or even shared between versions and there are little unique details.

This ransomware is named Ukash Virus under the payment system it requires. The fines are paid using a pre-paid system called Ukash. None of official institutions would ask any payments via systems like Ukash therefore it only confirms that this is not a real warning but a virus used by scammers.

Ukash Virus gets into your PC through various security holes and vulnerabilities after visiting infected websites or downloading infected files. It might be distributed with a help of Trojan parasites too. Typically, updated and antivirus-protected PCs are quite safe, especially if Java is disabled. Once it is in your machine, you should remove Ukash Virus immediately.

The biggest problem is that Ukash Virus comes in several flavors and no single approach will be successful in all cases.

FBI Moneypak (Ransomeware) :- FBI Moneypak Ransomware is a PC threat that is sometimes exploited through spam email campaigns or by means of malicious websites. Either way, once the threat of FBI Moneypak Ransomware is present on a PC, it creates an aggravating scenario where a PC user is continually bombarded by misleading pop-up messages.Ransomware, FBI Moneypak Ransomware makes its presence well-known where it could limit the normal use of a computer or even block Internet access at times.FBI Moneypak Ransomware, in a way, holds an infected Windows PC for ransom until the user   gives in by relinquishing credit card information. The ultimate goal of FBI Moneypak Ransomware is to scam users out of money and then leave the infected PC with an unwanted malware threat on it.

Google Redirect Virus(Malware/Spyware) :-  Google Redirect Virus is a very notorious malware designed to redirect your searches to malicious websites. This virus is also known as browser hijack virus or search engine redirect virus. This virus is infecting thousands of new machines everyday and It is very hard to remove as it is bundled with many rootkits commonly known as TLD3 or Alureon Rootkits. These rootkits change your computer settings in such a way that when type Google’s web address in address bar of your web browser, you are not actually taken to Google but to a malicious webpage which looks exactly as Google. When you make a search, you’ll see results exactly like Google, but when you click on any of those results, you’ll be taken to a website you’re not supposed to visit.

INF/Autorun (Malware/Spyware) :- Worm:Win32/Autorun!inf is a detection for autorun.inf files that may be used by worms when spreading to local, network, or removable drives. When copying themselves to a drive, these worms also create a file named 'autorun.inf' in the root of the targeted drive. The autorun.inf file contains execution instructions for the operating system which are invoked when the drive is viewed using Windows Explorer, thus executing the copy of the worm.

Flame (Malware/Spyware) :- Flame,[a] also known as Flamer, Skywiper, and Skywiper, is modular computer malware discovered in 2012 that attacks computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system. The program is being used for targeted cyber espionage in Middle Eastern countries. Its discovery was announced on 28 May 2012 by MAHER Center of Iranian National Computer Emergency Response Team.

Game Vance (Malware/Spyware) :-  It makes random ads pop up, it installs things and eats your computer’s HDD space, not good to download.

My Web search (Malware/Spyware) :-  A toolbar for Zwinky, etc. It’s known to download over 150 things on computer. It requests to have you shut off your anti-virus when you download it. If something ever asks that do not download it.

What is recovery disc and how to create in Windows Vista?

Recovery Disc

A recovery disc is a general term for media containing a backup of the original factory condition or a favored condition of a computer as configured by an original equipment manufacturer or an end-user. OEM supplied recovery media is commonly shipped with most computers to allow the user to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system and pre-loaded software as it was when it was shipped.

Recovery discs provided by OEM (original equipment manufacturer ) is different for every brand such as Dell, HP, Acer, Packard bell and Lenovo , here we are taking recovery disc example of  HP and Compaq.

After booting up your HP or Compaq Desktop computer using Windows Vista, be sure to create recovery discs for Windows Vista in HP Recovery Manager. The recovery discs will boot the computer and reset both the operating system and software to factory settings in case of system instability or failure. Be aware that different manufacturers may have different instructions; these are specifically for HP or Compaq Desktop PCs running Vista.

1 Disable Windows User Account Control.
  • Click Start and type "account" in the search field.
  • Click the blue hypertext that says "Turn User Account Control On or Off" at the bottom of the box that pops up.
  • Remove the check mark from the box in front of "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer."
  • Click OK.
2 Disable any drive encryption software that may be running such as bitlocker.
    3 Click Start>All Programs>PC Help & Tools>Recovery Disc Creation."
4 Click "Next" on the Recovery Manager Welcome screen.
5 Prepare your discs. The next screen will tell you exactly how many blank discs that you will need of each type for burning your recovery discs. Number each disc with a permanent marker so that can easily keep them in order.
6 Insert the first disc into your tray. When you close the tray, the "Next" button will light. #*Click the "Next" button to proceed.
    • If an AutoPlay window pops up, close it by clicking the "X" in the top right corner of the window.
7 Click "Next" in the disc verification window.
8 Wait while the discs are created. You will see a Recovery Manager process window that will tell you exactly how the program is progressing.
    • The program will go through 3 stages including Collecting files, Writing files onto disc, and Verifying CD or DVD contents. This may take 20 to 40 minutes.
    • Clicking "Cancel" during this process could result in a corrupted and unusable disc.

9 Remove the first disc when you see the screen that says "Disc 1 of 2 successfully created."
10 Insert the next disc after the first has been finished and click Next."

    • Continue burning discs and follow the on-screen instructions until you've created your last disc.
    • You are finished when you see a screen that says "System Recovery Discs Creation complete."
11 Click Next after removing the disc and then Finish to complete the session. Store the discs and use them to recover your computer in case of system instability or failure.

How to Create Windows 7 Bootable Disk using Nero

We have already blogged that how we can create a bootable DVD of Windows Vista and  Windows 7 using WAIK(Windows Automated Installation Kit) as Microsoft does.

Now we have come with a simple and straight how we can create bootable DVD of Windows Vista/7 using Nero burning software.

(We are using Nero because it is one of the popular CD/DVD burning software and can be available easily. You can grab the Trial version of Nero official website.)

Requires:

  • Windows Vista/Windows 7 Installation Source Files
  • Blank DVD and Nero.

How To:

  1. First of all, install Nero and prepare your Installation source files by copying them to particular folder or directory. Lets say- all files are copied to C:\DVD folder.
  2. Start Nero Burning ROM (Go to Start >> All Programs >> Nero >> Nero 9 and click on Nero Burning ROM). On New Compilation dialog box, Select DVD as compilation and then DVD-ROM (Boot).

  • On Boot tab and locate boot image file using Browse button. (Windows Vista and Windows 7 installation source contain boot image file called etfsboot.com in Boot directory) See the above image.
  • Windows Vista x64 Installation files doesn’t contain etfsboot.com, so you can use the same file from x86 version.
  • Now under Advanced, check Enable expert settings (for advanced users only), set emulation type as No Emulation &  number of loaded sectors as 8 and leave rest of settings intact. (1 sector = 512Bytes, etfsboot.com requires 4.0KB to boot DVD)
  • On ISO tab, select File name length as Max. of 31 chars (Level 2). Now move Label tab and set the label of disc, say “Windows 7 DVD”.

  • On Burn tab, don’t forget to check Finalize the disc (No further writing possible!). Now almost everything is done, so click on New to add Windows 7 Installation Source files.
Just select all files and folders from DVD and drag them under to Windows 7 DVD. That’s it, now click on Burn button on toolbar or choose Recorder menu >> Burn Compilation. Insert the blank DVD into drive and set appropriate burning speed. It is recommended to burn disc lower speed (2x or 2.4x) for better results.

How to enhance computer performance: 6 ways to speed up your PC

By following a few simple guidelines, you can maintain your computer, help increase your PC speed, and help keep it running smoothly. This article discusses how to use the tools available in Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP Service Pack 3 to help make your computer faster, maintain your computer efficiently, and help safeguard your privacy when you're online.

    1. Remove spyware, and help protect your computer from viruses

Spyware collects personal information without letting you know and without asking for permission. From the websites you visit to user names and passwords, spyware can put you and your confidential information at risk. In addition to privacy concerns, spyware can hamper your computer's performance.
Download Microsoft Security Essentials for free to help guard your system in the future from viruses, spyware, adware, and other malicious software (also known as malware). Microsoft Security Essentials acts as a spyware removal tool and includes automatic updates to help keep your system protected from emerging threats.

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is another utility that checks computers running Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 for infections by specific, prevalent malicious software, including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom, and helps remove any infection found.

    2. Free up disk space

The Disk Cleanup tool helps you to free up space on your hard disk to improve the performance of your computer. The tool identifies files that you can safely delete and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files. You can also use CCleaner it's a free junk removal tool.
    Use Disk Cleanup to:
    • Remove temporary Internet files.
    • Delete downloaded program files, such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets.
    • Empty the Recycle Bin.
    • Remove Windows temporary files, such as error reports.
    • Delete optional Windows components that you don't use.
    • Delete installed programs that you no longer use.
    • Remove unused restore points and shadow copies from System Restore.
Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.

    3. Speed up access to data

Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk as a file is opened (to piece it back together). The response time can be significantly longer.
Disk Defragmenter (sometimes shortened to Defrag by users) is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end to end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.
    When to run Disk Defragmenter
In addition to running Disk Defragmenter at regular intervals (weekly is optimal), there are other times you should run it, too, such as when:
    • You add a large number of files.
    • Your free disk space totals 15 percent or less.
    • You install new programs or a new version of the Windows operating system.

    4. Detect and repair disk errors

In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.
As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.
If you use your computer daily, you should run this utility once a week to help prevent data loss.

    Run the Error Checking utility:

    1. Close all open files.
    2. Click Start, and then click Computer.
    3. In the Computer window (My Computer in Windows XP), right-click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors, and then click Properties.
    4. In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab.
    5. Click the Check Now button.
    6. In the Check Disk dialog box (called Error-checking in Windows 7), select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.

    5. Learn about ReadyBoost

If you're using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you can use ReadyBoost to speed up your system. A new concept in adding memory to a system, it allows you to use non-volatile flash memory—like a USB flash drive or a memory card—to improve performance without having to add additional memory.

    6.  Upgrade  to  Windows 7

If you try all the previous remedies and your computer still isn't as fast as you would like it to be, you may want to consider updating to Windows 7.
If the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor determines that your computer can't run Windows 7 and you still have the need for speed, it might be time for a new computer. There are some great deals on new computers right now:

Note: Some of the tools mentioned in this article require you to be logged on as an administrator. If you aren't logged on as an administrator, you can only change settings that apply to your user account.

How to create and use repair disc in Windows 7

System repair disc will be used to repair your corrupted Operating System files without loss of any data.

Below is the Example how to "Create a System Repair Disc in Windows 7".

The new version of Windows seems to be a lot for stable than previous releases, however you never know when a malfunction might occur. Today we take a look at an option in Windows 7 that lets you create a System Repair disc in case you need to boot from it to recover your OS.

    Create System Repair Disc
Type system repair disc into the search box in the Start menu.

The dialog box opens where you select the right drive and click Create disc. A CD will be fine as it only takes up 142MB of space.

    Using the Disc

If you are having problems with your machine just pop in the recovery disc and boot from it and enter into Windows Setup [EMS Enabled].

After it boots up you can access recovery tools or restore the computer back to a system image.
Now you can choose from different recovery options to help you get your machine back up and running.
You never know when an Operating System disaster might occur, but having a System Recovery Disc to boot from should be part of your backup and recovery toolbox in case it does.

How to create Windows7 bootable disk?

    What is bootable disk?

A boot disk or bootable disk is a removable digital data storage medium from which a computer can load and run (boot) an operating system or utility program. The computer must have a built-in program which will load and execute a program from a boot disk meeting certain standards.
    Boot disks are used for:
    • Operating system installation
    • Data recovery
    • Data purging
    • Hardware or software troubleshooting
    • BIOS flashing
    • Customizing an operating environment
    • Software demonstration
    • Administrative access in case of lost password is possible with an appropriate boot disk with some operating systems
How to create Windows7 bootable disk?

Here we are using WAIK to create bootable disk.

    What is it?
It’s the Windows 7 Automated Installation Kit, or WAIK.  WAIK is useful for IT Professionals to have a boot disk that will boot up from a CD instead of the computer’s hard drive.  With the boot CD, you can boot with a CD and open up, you have the same basic functionality as you would have if you had booted up with a DOS floppy disk.  This boot disk also gives you a little extra functionality that I talk about a little later.

    Why do I need it?
    • Have you ever had a computer blue screen on you and you needed to get a file off the hard drive now?
    • Have you noticed that the use of floppy disks as a boot media is all but completely dead?
    • Have you ever had a boot sector virus that you needed to clean but couldn’t get to?
    • Have you ever wanted to install an OS from the ground up but needed a way to boot the computer first?
This allows you to do this.

What do I need to install it?
To install the Windows 7 AIK, you need to have one of the following OSes (Operating Systems) installed on a computer:
    • Windows Server 2003 R2 SP3
    • Windows Vista SP1
    • Windows Server 2008 family
    • Windows 7 family
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 family
Where do I get the download?
The Windows 7 AIK ISO image can be downloaded here.  The Windows 7 AIK Documentation can be downloaded here.

After you’ve burned the DVD from the ISO image, insert it into a DVD drive.  The installation menu will appear:
Select the Windows AIK Setup option highlighted in Red in this image (below):
This batch file assumes the following:
    1. that you have installed the WAIK on the computer’s C: drive in the default directory.  If you install in the WAIK in another directory, you’ll need to update the paths in the batch file (noted in blue).
    2. that you are installing the 32bit version (denoted as the “x86” parameter in purple);
    3. That you don’t currently have a directory (folder) on the C: drive called “winpe_x86”.  If you need to change the target folder, change the folders in orange.
Open Notepad and copy the following batch file commands into Notepad:
    CD "C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools"
    CALL copype.cmd x86 c:\winpe_x86
    copy c:\winpe_x86\winpe.wim c:\winpe_x86\ISO\sources\boot.wim
    copy "C:\program files\Windows AIK\Tools\x86\imagex.exe" C:\winpe_x86\iso\
    oscdimg -n -bC:\winpe_x86\etfsboot.com C:\winpe_x86\ISO C:\winpe_x86\winpe_x86.iso
rem To remove the "Press any key to boot from CD" prompt during boot,
rem remove the bootfix.bin file from the \boot folder within your mounted image.
    pause

This will build a bootable CD ISO image that can be burned using any CD burner program that can burn a CD using an ISO image.

What else can I do with this disk?
Okay, I’ve booted to a command prompt.  What now?  Well, now you have access to NTFS file system drives, older FAT/FAT32 drives via command prompt.  You also have access to USB devices thanks to plug-and-play being enabled.  You have access to the CD/DVD drives.  You have complete access over the local computer hard drives.  If you plug in a USB thumbdrive, it will automatically be assigned a drive letter and you will have access to it.
